From identity to identification: fixating the fragmented self

At the Discourse and Communication Conference in Loughborough, March 29, I held a keynote about identity management and how it presupposes and prescribes a single identity for each individual. This is very much at odds with cultural theory and practice around multiple identities  that have lead to various diversity policies. Tensions between singleness and multiplicity express themselves in the single name policy of Facebook and Google; in the problems that full body scans pose for transgender people; in the way national governments increasingly limit double citizenship; and in many other things. The presentation was part of a longer article that will introduce a forthcoming special issue of Media, Culture and Society, reflecting on new developments in identity theory.
