Speaking at Iris Marion Young Memorial

5 07 2012

The research group Inclusive Thinking of the Free University in Amsterdam organised a day-long seminar in memory of the work of Iris Marion Young, and to celebrate the launch of a new book by one of its members Ulrike Vieten about gender and cosmopolitanism in Europe. Talked about veiling as a political act that needs to be framed in the context of freedom of speech. Also discussed how YouTube offers a space to Muslim women to perform their religious and political identities. Borrowing heavily from the Headscarves and Pornochic article (2007), and the work we did on Fitna in Feminist Review (2011).
