Celebrity and media logic: two PhD defenses

1 02 2013

Today and yesterday are Viva days, as we would say in England, or ‘promotiedagen’, as we would say in Dutch. Examining PhD-theses, in other words. Yesterday I was in Antwerp for PhD Candidate Koen Panis, who defended his research about Flemish celebrities endorsing non-profit goals. Very thorough analysis, although I missed a gender perspective. We therefore did a nice little excercise about five organisations and whether they would need a male or female celebrity to endorse them. Brilliant escape by Koen when asked about the Flemish gun collectors: ‘No celebrity would want to endorse them to begin with!’.

Today I’ll be at the VU in Amsterdam, for the defense byn Janet Takens, whose dissertation is about media logic and its influence on campaign journalism. My claim will be that media logic cannot have an effect on the media themselves,  that would be a tautology. I am sure Janet will disagree, and I hope strongly!
