Talk about gender and sexuality

29 10 2014

On september 19, indeed it is some time ago, I gave a talk at the opening of the Academic Year by the Centre for Gender and Sexuality of the University of Amsterdam. The Centre director Rachel Spronk and her colleagues had organised a great event with Feona Attwood, Roger Lancaster and myself as main speakers. Some 80 people attended, a nice combination of staff and students. All our talks focused on how sex and sexualizatioN have become recurring topics of moral panic, and especially Roger’s talk, drawing from his book ‘ Sex panic and the punitive state’ (University of California Press, 2011) was impressive and heart breaking; in the sense that the most silly offenses can lead you straight into American prison.
